Let’s face it, if you’re from New England it’s been a long winter with a TON of snow. I’ve noticed that even the diehard exercisers aren’t getting outside right now because the roads are so narrow it’s just not safe. That’s when most people stop exercising. But you don’t have to. If you have access to a treadmill, here’s a quick 20 minute workout you can do to get the blood pumping and the heart rate up.
Get on the treadmill and choose a pace that is brisk for you:
Minute 1: Walk at one mile per hour below the pace that you chose
Minute 2: Walk at the pace you chose
Minute 3: Continue to walk at this pace and INCREASE the incline to 1%
Minute 4: INCREASE the incline to 2%
Minutes 5 through 10: Continue to INCREASE the incline by 1% each minute
Minute 11 through 18: Now DECREASE the incline by 1% each minute
Minute 19: Slow your pace down a little and walk it out to 20 minutes
This is called a ladder routine because you move the incline back down the same way you went up. As you get better at this you can put the inclines up even more, increase your pace or make the workout longer. Try increasing the incline by 2% at a time for a bigger challenge. You can even do this at a jog if you prefer, just increase the pace to a jogging one. Give it a try and have fun with it!
